140th Anniversary
Today marks the exact date 140 years ago that the House of Commons, led by Sir John A. MacDonald passed the bill to create the North West Mounted Police.
For 140 years, the history of our organization has been interwoven with the history of our country. Together, Canada and the RCMP have experienced great highs and some lows. We have navigated the tides of unimaginable change in the world around us.
I believe one of the reasons we have persevered in fact, thrived is because of our sense of family. Our regular members, public service employees, civilian members, auxiliaries, cadets and volunteers are all part of our family. Being an employee of the RCMP is so much more than a job and a pay cheque. When you sign on to be a part of this historic organization, you sign on as another link in a legacy that now dates back 140 years.
We hold in our uniform and in our hearts the pride of those who have gone before us, those who have forged the path which we walk today. A path etched on a connection with the communities and citizens we are charged with serving and protecting. A path guided by the principle of Maintiens le droit.
We are at a critical point in the RCMPs history. From the challenges and scrutiny of recent years comes an imperative to renew the organization. We are working to address the culture and composition of the Force. We are significantly increasing the number of women recruited into the RCMP.
We are taking steps to strengthen transparency in the promotion process. We are building a more welcoming and respectful workplace. Our plans will challenge us to meet our goals, and require us to be innovative. I am confident that we will deliver and succeed in meeting Canadians expectations of the RCMP.
To my fellow employees, be proud of what this organization has accomplished. There is tremendous strength and great pride in being a member of this family.
There is also significant responsibility. We must focus on our mission. Continue putting our core values into action integrity, honesty, professionalism, compassion, respect and accountability.
And every day this historic day especially always remember the important role you have played in its success.
Be proud. Be humble. Be safe.

Aujourdhui marque le 140e anniversaire du jour où la Chambre des communes, sous la direction de Sir John A. Macdonald, a adopté le projet de loi visant à créer la Police à cheval du Nord Ouest.
Depuis 140 ans, lhistoire de notre organisation fait partie intégrante de lhistoire de notre pays. Ensemble, le Canada et la GRC ont connu des succès et quelques défis. Nous avons navigué les courants de changements incommensurables dans le monde qui nous entoure.
À mon avis, une des raisons de notre persévérance, voire de notre croissance, est le sentiment dappartenance à une grande famille. Membres réguliers, employés de la fonction publique, membres civils, membres auxiliaires, cadets et bénévoles, tous font partie de la famille.
Être employé de la GRC, cest beaucoup plus quun emploi rémunéré. Lorsque vous postulez un emploi au sein de cette organisation au riche patrimoine, vous constituez un autre maillon dune chaîne dont lexistence remonte à 140 ans. Sur notre uniforme et dans notre cœur se lit la fierté de tous nos prédécesseurs, des gens qui ont ouvert le sentier que nous suivons aujourdhui.
Une voie fondée sur les liens avec la collectivité et les citoyens que nous sommes chargés de servir et de protéger. Inspirée des principes de « Maintiens le droit. » Nous sommes désormais à un tournant de notre histoire. Les difficultés et lexamen minutieux dont lorganisation a fait lobjet ces dernières années imposent un exercice de renouvellement.
Nous nous penchons notamment sur la culture et la composition de la GRC. Nous prenons des mesures pour accroître sensiblement le nombre de recrues féminines à la GRC. Nous avons entrepris de renforcer la transparence du processus de promotion.
Nous aménageons un environnement de travail plus accueillant et empreint de respect. Nos plans nous inciteront à réaliser nos objectifs et à faire preuve dinnovation. Je suis persuadé que nous atteindrons nos buts et que nous répondrons aux attentes des Canadiens à notre égard.
À mes collègues, je dis : soyez fiers des réalisations de notre organisation. Lappartenance à cette grande famille suscite une force et une fierté remarquables. Ainsi quune grande responsabilité. Nous devons nous concentrer sur notre mission.
Continuer de manifester nos valeurs fondamentales intégrité, honnêteté, professionnalisme, compassion, respect et responsabilité. Et chaque jour plus particulièrement en ce jour historique , rappelez-vous le rôle important que vous avez joué dans la réussite de notre organisation.
