Corporal Robert Gordon Teather, C. V.


Corporal Robert Gordon Teather, C. V., a member of the RCMP diving Team, out of Surrey Detachment BC, rescued two fishers trapped in the hull of their capsized boat. This heroic rescue occurred in the early morning hours of September 26, 1981.

For his action, Corporal Teather was awarded the Cross of Valour. He was the first RCMP awarded the Cross of Valour – the highest Canadian Bravery Award.

In February, 2011, the Canadian government announced that the Canadian Coast Guard's nine new Mid Shore Patrol Vessels will be named after heroic Canadians who put their duty ahead of their safety in service to our country of Canada.

Two now deceased RCMP members so honoured were;


Corporal Robert Gordon Teather,

& Constable J. L. Francois Carriére.


The Patrol Vessels entered service in 2013.

Corporal Teather also wrote several books, one of which included, 'The Underwater Investigator, Encyclopedia of Underwater Investigations', Scarlet Tunic – Volumes 1 & 2.

Corporal Teather passed away on November 14, 2004.
